I’m still getting lots of questions about Bowen Therapy so I’ve written the following blog to debunk some of the myths I’ve heard.

It’s the same as a massage – The Bowen Technique is NOT the same as massage. There are some similarities, namely it’s a whole-body treatment and it’s very relaxing but that’s where the similarities end. Bowen is a series of moves using the therapist’s fingers and thumbs, over specific muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. Gentle pressure is used to effect a movement of the tissue.

Manipulation is used – NO manipulation is used during a Bowen treatment. It is a very gentle therapy. Bowen is about working with the body to allow it to restore its structural integrity.

Different oils are used – no oils or creams are used during treatment. Treatment is done using the therapist’s hands-on skin or over loose clothing.

The Therapist will recommend medication – Bowen therapists do not prescribe medication nor advise you to make any changes to your medication. However, some remedies are recommended in Bowen and your Bowen Therapist will explain these.

It’s your back that is worked on – Bowen is a full body treatment that helps a wide variety of issues. Some examples include back pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder, golfers elbow, neck pain, asthma, migraines, ankle injuries and knee pain.

It can’t help with stress – Bowen therapy CAN help with stress. Some moves in particular have been shown to improve stress levels.

You only get Bowen if you’re in pain – many athletes or people who exercise often get regular Bowen treatments as a preventative measure. This helps them stay injury-free.

It can’t be used on pregnant women – Bowen therapy has been shown to have many benefits during pregnancy. An example is for back pain. This is particularly common in the third trimester when many women struggle with back pain. Bowen therapy can be repeated more often in pregnant women to help them stay well.

Children can’t have Bowen therapy –Bowen therapy can be helpful at EVERY age, even babies or toddlers.

You need to remove your clothes

Bowen can be done without removing clothing. It is better to have loose clothing on such as leggings, shorts, t-shirts and preferably not jeans.
